Behind the Scenes Senior Portrait - Connor Stephens | Emily McGonigle Photography

A few weeks ago I had the pleasure of getting to photograph Connor Stephen's senior portrait session. Connor, who is a senior at Independence High School, is in marching band, and aspires to be an engineer, was a ton of fun to work with. Besides the fact that his sense of humor is on point, his love for Dr. Pepper is also something I can wholly get on board with.

Connor and his mother met me and Ashley, my makeup artist for the day, at the studio for his mini makeover. While Ashley was working with him, I told him about the Mutemath show I had seen recently, and he introduced me to one of his favorite bands, Coin. We actually ended up listening to Coin for the majority of his shoot. They’re a really good band, ha.

After Ashley finished with Connor, we headed to Nashville for a more urban setting for his photo shoot. Connor really loves Fall, and while I was hoping for some more vibrant colors (the leaves were still pretty green at that point), the weather was gorgeous. If we had waited a week for his session, we would have been totally rained out, and the week after *that* all the leaves were gone. Green leaves are better than no leaves, so I’m really glad we had his session when we did.

At our location, we had a good mix of urban textures and nature. We even got a taste of the local culture, when a gentlemen using a rope to drag a flatscreen TV on a skateboard, walked by. We don’t know who he was… or where he was going… but one thing was for certain: He was on a mission.

During our shoot Connor was super relaxed and comfortable in front of the camera, so he was really easy to work with! I even jokingly told him that I was going to start bringing him on shoots to show guys how to pose for their photos. He agreed to do it… for a fee. He’s a model, AND an entrepreneur! LOL
